Why Can’t We Love the Way We’re Supposed to Love?

Why is it so difficult for us to love the way we’re supposed to love? And yet we expect others to love us in that way!:

“Love Divine”

Love Divine, oh, Love Divine,
I cannot love like You;
When shadows shutter aching heart,
I don’t know what to do.

Love Divine, oh, Blessed One,
How can I heed love’s call?
Each time I try to love like You
I stumble, reach and fall.

Empower me, dear Lamb of God
To love from my life’s cross;
Those barbs from them who love me not
Will teach me sweetest cost.

Come forth, Sweet Love, as higher tide
And drown this selfish heart;
To love like You will take a flood
To tear this soul apart.
