No wonder so many people become depressed and even suicidal during the Christmas season. Society has made it into a time when you’re supposed to have huge family gatherings, lots of presents, Christmas plays , romance and diamonds; huge meals with siblings and wives and husbands and cousins and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. How would Jesus celebrate Christmas? He wouldn’t be in a huge family gathering and probably not even hanging out with His disciples. He would be reaching out to the lost, the poor, the orphans and the widows. He would be giving of Himself as His gift to everyone, not buying expensive presents that people will trade back in for cash. Jesus IS our Christmas gift, and He gave His life without bows, ribbons, or fancy wrapping paper. He was beaten, slapped, spit upon and hung on a wooden cross at the town dump. No, Christmas isn’t the songs about coffee and pumpkin pie or sleigh-riding or Christmas-caroling. It’s about how God loved us so much, He sent His Son into this hateful world so we could receive salvation. It’s about getting out there in the world and helping the hurting and loving the unloveable. It’s about going outside the walls of the church to be with the lonely. It’s about Jesus.
